Tribute to 1821

Historical painting in Greece is dedicated to depicting the portraits of the figures of the Revolution and to staged compositions of the War of Independence. The heroism and self- sacrifice of the fighters are presented as moral exemplars and as testimony to the historical continuity of Hellenism. Artists render the figures of the heroes either in an academic style or by adopting modern trends, often drawing clear influence from the works of Philhellenes painters.

This section presents works, mainly by Arcadian artists, which come from the exhibition “Portraits of Kolokotronis” (Tripoli 2015).
