Tsarouchas Nikos

Nikos Tsarouchas was born in 1981 in Tripoli, Arcadia, where he began painting at an early age. He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts (2000-2005), painting (with distinction) with Triantafyllos Patraskidis, Vassilis Vlastaras and Martinos Gavathas, photography with Manolis Babousis and sculpture with Nikos Tranos. Since 2007, he has been working as a professor of visual arts in secondary education in Tripoli. His works are in private and public collections in Greece and abroad: indicatively, we mention the American College of Greece, the Institute of Culture of Campeche (Mexico), the City Hall of Levidi and the Presidency of the Republic. Furthermore, his works have been published in the book entitled “The Secrets of the World” (Ed. Batsioulas). Tsarouchas’ style is mainly abstract expressionism while using figurative elements. The main source of inspiration for his paintings is nature itself and the animals found in it. He is interested in enclosing the figures in their environment, however, the use of certain figurative elements helps the viewer to better understand the subject that the artist wants to present.

The painting “Portrait of Theodoros Kolokotronis” (2015), which is in the Tripoli collection, has been painted with acrylic paints on canvas. As he himself states: “the aim is to show what Kolokotronis’ aura and the idea behind his face exude more and not so much to render a portrait of the Commander-in-Chief of the Greek Revolution as such”. The fluidity of the outlines and the quick gestural movements of his brush achieve this effort. In this painting by Tsarouchas, the unity of the face with its environment is evident as the cobalt blue is incorporated mainly in the hair, the arch of the eyebrows and the upper lip of the face, while at the same time this use functions as an emphatic element to highlight these basic characteristics of Kolokotronis.
