Schoina Mary

Mary Schoina was born in Serres in 1948 and studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts, where she was taught printmaking by K. Grammatopoulos and book arts by G. Papadakis. She continued her studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris with teachers G. Dayez and A. Hadad, as well as at New York University in New York City. She taught Visual Arts at the College of Athens and served as Professor of Printmaking at the Athens School of Fine Arts from 1993 to 2015.

Her themes are drawn from the Greek countryside, while characteristic elements of her work include an emphasis on design elements, clarity of details, expressive colors, gentle tones, a tendency towards shaping and geometric austerity, as well as a lyrical mood. She has exhibited her work in 30 solo exhibitions and in over 100 group and international Biennales in Greece and abroad. She has been awarded two prizes, in 2003 in Kyoto and in 2009 in Krakow. In 2014, she participated in the exhibition of the Hellenic Presidency of the Council of the European Union in Brussels.
