Vasileiou Georgia

Georgia Vasileiou was born in Tripoli in 1912 and died in Athens in 1986. Her parents were Petros and Angeliki Vasileiou. She graduated from the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA) in 1942, where her professors included Epameinondas Thomopoulos, Umberto Argyros, and Dimitris Biskinis. Subsequently, in 1947, she moved to Paris to continue her studies at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie André Lhote.

She participated in solo and group exhibitions both in Greece and abroad, such as the Salon d’Hiver, Salon d’Automne, and Salon des Indépendants. Her works are held in various private and public collections. Her art primarily consists of figurative works with elements of abstraction, and her themes mainly include portraits, scenes of everyday life, nudes, and interior spaces. Her overall work is characterized by romanticism and youthfulness, which is mainly expressed through an Impressionist style.

In the collection of the Municipality of Tripolis, there are a total of fifty-six works by Vasileiou, including forty oil paintings and sixteen drawings-studies done with pencil and charcoal. Her oil paintings feature landscapes, portraits, still life’s, and scenes of daily life, with some subjects being depicted more than once with slight variations in composition. The Impressionist style is conveyed through a personal, light-colored palette that evokes feelings of joy and nostalgia. She uses the same color palette across all her works. However, the piece titled “Branches with Birds” stands out, as she uses brighter and more cheerful colors to depict the animal element, with a golden hue dominating the background. In her drawings- studies in pencil and charcoal-her skill as a painter is evident, capturing and expressing the spiritual world of people.
